Reading magazines stimulates our minds and helps us generate ideas for writing and business. Reading magazines also helps us understand the world better and thus navigate the many different facets of life: relationships, health, politics, the economy, and much more.
We need to know what is going on so we can adapt ourselves to the ever-changing world; this allows us to increase our happiness and improve the long-term prospects for ourselves and our loved ones.
And, of course, we can read for pure enjoyment.
I read in many different areas…
Newsweek
Good analysis on important national and international economic and political topics. It supplements the news and opinion I get online and helps tie it all together into a bigger picture.
Scientific American
Hey, I’m a science guy. I studied physics, chemistry, biology, and other science subjects in college, and I got my bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. Scientific American covers important advances and ideas in all sciences, but is especially good on climate change and environmental problems, a very important topic for me.
Astronomy
My first love in science and my first major in college. I sometimes wonder what my life would be like if I’d stuck with it.
PC World
I’m not a major techie guy, but I like to keep up with major trends in computers, electronic gadgets, software, and web applications.
Backpacker
I’ve been an avid hiker since I began wandering the foothills outside Anderson, California as a young boy. (Thanks for the freedom, Mom!) I still hike and backpack when I can, and I began my freelance career by writing outdoors articles for magazines and newspapers, and by authoring two hiking guidebooks on northern California.
Outside
Hands-down the best in outdoors adventure writing, even though it sometimes strays into yuppie outdoor fashion and other boring topics.
Consumer Reports Health
I just subscribed a couple of months ago. So far I’m impressed. The mag does a good job presented no-hype findings from the latest scientific studies about health, and health is very, very important to me. I want to live to be a very active and happy old man.
And You?
What are your favorite magazines? Why do you read them?
